Reader Friday-Let’s Go To The Movies

Hey TKZ gang! Let’s talk movie lines. We all have our favorites and I thought it’d be fun to share a few. Doesn’t have to be well-known, or spoken by a famous actor. Just one that grabbed your attention.

I have several favorites, like: We’re gonna need a bigger boat (Roy Scheider in Jaws); or, I have a very particular set of skills (Liam Neeson in Taken). And, …the future is coming and you’re not in it…” (Hammer to Mav, played by Ed Harris and Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Maverick).

But I have a new favorite, just realized the other evening when we were watching one of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible flicks. It slipped by me so quickly, I had to back up the movie to hear it again. Those movies (and we have all of them!) are more known for great action than stellar acting (sorry, Tom), but one of the bad guys had a moment. I can’t explain why the line resonated with me–maybe because it made me think about the world we live in.

Solomon Lane, played by Sean Harris

Here it is, spoken by bad guy Solomon Lane, played by actor Sean Harris: “Human nature, my weapon of choice . . .”

Dwell on that for a moment.

Okay, over to you, TKZers! What’s your favorite movie line?

Our TKZ holiday break is approaching, so I’ll see you again on the other side of 2024! Hope you all have a great and peaceful holiday season…

  1. My favorite line from the 1967 movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was spoken by Sidney Poitier.
“Dad… Dad, you’re my father. I’m your son. I love you. I always have and I always will, but you think of yourself as a colored man. I think of myself as a man.”

    • Hi Vonda…that’s truly a gem of a line for sure.

I remember watching that movie, and discussing that very line at the dinner table with the parents and brothers and sister. Quite a discussion. I was 13 at the time, and my glazed-over teenage eyes were opened that night. 🙂

Thanks for the memory, and have a great weekend!

  2. Ah, movie lines! So many to choose from.

“So run, you cur. RUN! Tell all the other curs the law’s comin’! You tell ’em I’M comin’, and hell’s comin’ with me, you hear? Hell’s comin’ with me!” – Tombstone

UGARTE: “You despise me, don’t you, Rick?”
RICK: “If I gave you any thought I probably would.” – Casablanca

“Oh, Jerry, don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” – Now, Voyager

    • RE: Tombstone—a popular visitor destination in AZ and I literally have got the t-shirt. It doesn’t have the full quote but a shorter variation of hell’s coming with me.

    • Morning, Jim!

Tombstone is one of our favorite movies. And that line crystallizes why, I think. Something about knowing when it’s time to step up to the plate and take care of business.

Thanks for stopping by this morning, and have a very Merry Christmas, Sir!

  3. In the grand scheme of things, I watch very few movies compared to most. Not sure why, just was never as into movies as television (back in the day).

But Clint Eastwood is the one whose quotes come immediately to mind when this question comes up, first with “Go ahead, make my day” as Dirty Harry in Sudden Impact (and there’s a great novelty song he sings with TG Shepherd that I highly recommend that touts this line. Now I’m gonna have to go listen to it again for the millionth time. LOL!)

And “A man’s got to know his limitations.” (I believe from Magnum Force)

And Eastwood again in “Every Which Way But Loose” – “Right turn, Clyde.” Always great for a laugh.

Thank you, Mr. Eastwood, you made a lot of memories for this viewer!

As for television, in my life I have found Star Trek: TOS to be the most quotable franchise.

RE: “Human nature, my weapon of choice.” I hadn’t heard that before but it sure is powerful.

    • Good morning, Brenda. Some great lines here from a great actor. Clyde’s one of my favorites, also.

If you YouTube the line “Human nature, my weapon of choice…” you’ll hear Sean Harris’s chilling delivery.

      Have a great day!

    • Hi Terry!

The hero who has a weakness, right? And delivered perfectly, of course, by Harrison Ford.

I read somewhere that many memorable movie lines aren’t even in the script, they’re ad-libbed by the actor. I wonder if this was one of those.

      Have a great weekend!

  4. “I don’t know. Fly casual.” – Han Solo, Return of the Jedi
“What a silly game. The only winning move is not to play.” Joshua, WarGames
“Leave the guns. Take the cannoli.” Godfather.

I could do this all day.

    • Hi Alan!

I think this crowd could also do it all day long. I like those lines, especially the one from The Godfather, one of my favorite movies. Not familiar with WarGames, but we are presently re-watching all 6 of the Star Wars movies just for kicks. Definitely some great lines in those.

      “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for…”

      Have a good one!

      • During Covid quarantine my oldest child and I watched the complete Star Wars. Phantom Menace doesn’t get better the second time around.

War Games 1983 Mathew Brodrick Ally Sheedy. The movie opens with a pair of Air Force launch control officers. One of my college classmates was a launch control officer.

  5. At my house, we use movie quotes in casual conversation, so it’s hard to pick, but one of my favorites still has to be from James Cameron’s Avatar —

“When I was lying there in the VA hospital, with a big hole blown through the middle of my life, I started having these dreams of flying.”

    • Hi Michelle…we use movie quotes, too. One of our faves is from, again, Top Gun, Maverick. Someone says to Mav, “Don’t give me that look” and he says, “It’s the only look I got”. Perfect in certain scenarios, yes?

…a big hole blown through the middle of my life…I think most folks can identify with that.

Thanks for stopping by this morning!

  6. “That rug really tied the room together.”
“Careful, man, there’s a beverage here!”
“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.”
Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski. The Big Lebowski

“This is not ‘Nam, this is bowling… There are rules.”
    Walter Sobchak. The Big Lebowski

“Please, no comedians in the ranks.”
    Color Sergeant Borne. Zulu

Luke Skywalker: “More wealth than you can imagine.”
Han Solo: “I Don’t Know, I Can Imagine Quite A Bit.” Star Wars

    • Hi Dale!

These are great! Especially “This is not ‘Nam, this is bowling…There are rules.” Takes me right back to the ’60s…

And, as I mentioned somewhere, we’re re-watching all 6 Star Wars movies, and just heard that line last night. 🙂

Have a great weekend, my friend!

    • Welcome, Yoda!

Thanks for reminding me of this line, Kay. I’ve used it on my kiddos and grand-kiddos over the years. The evil emperor called him “my little green friend” in one scene, and I always laugh when he delivers that line. Because I know what’s coming… 🙂

      Have a great day!

  7. You might also ask what are the worst one liners! I’ll start:

“You had me at hello.” — Renee Zellwenger in Jerry McGuire. Gag gag gag…

Beaten by a hair by the all-time suckiest:
“Love means never having to say youre sorry.”
