Reader Eater Friday-What’s On YOUR Plate?

Thanksgiving approacheth…or so says Shakespeare.

When we think of the Thanksgiving holiday, it’d be nice if the first thing that came to mind was how grateful we should be for the blessings bestowed upon us. And how to bless others with what we have.

But often it’s all about the food, isn’t it?

Only one simple question today–let’s get it out of the way so we can go back to counting our blessings and giving some away.

TKZers, what is your favorite Thanksgiving meal? Okay, two questions. Will you gather with friends and family this year?

For us, we’ll be trekking across town to my son and daughter-in-law’s house . . . and their nine kiddos. Always a blast!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

  1. My wife has been ill for a week or so. Our son, who does our cooking, suggests postponing T-Day until she’s feeling better. The turkey is in the freezer and can stay there a while.

  2. I don’t cook so I and a friend usually go to Cracker Barrel for Thanksgiving, although this year we’re going to get crazy and do a different restaurant instead. LOL!

  3. Because of scheduling, we’re doing our family dinner tomorrow. Not a problem for us. It’s the thought that counts. It’s a small gathering, which is fine with me. I’m in charge of dessert. Host makes the turkey, and everyone brings a contribution.
Hubster and I haven’t decided what the two of us will do on the “real” Thanksgiving Day.

    • Watch Miracle on 34th Street and decorate for Christmas [or other holiday]. That will be our afternoon… if I can tear him away from football…. [sigh]

    • Hi Terry!

It’s good that you are able to be flexible. And sometimes, just lazing around on the “real” day is the best. We’ve done that when our fam goes their separate ways to see other loved ones, and it doesn’t bother me a bit.

Have a good day today, and next week!

  4. After a lovely, warm fall with temperatures well above normal, the forecast is calling for a snowstorm on Thanksgiving where my husband’s parents live. However, nothing will keep the family from gathering at their house. Only 16 of us this year, but since in-laws are 91 and 94, it seems important to those who can, to be there. Our son is even taking his camper up there today so his family of six will have a place to sleep. I haven’t quite convinced my husband that it would be nice to take ours, too.

Cheesy Potato Casserole is the most asked-for side. Last year, while at our daughter’s house in Virginia, we couldn’t find frozen hash browns, so thought what the hey, and substituted Tator-Tots. Then, she didn’t have any minced or fresh onions, and we didn’t want to go to the grocery store again, so dumped in some of the seasoned onion rings that go in green bean casserole, and the result was the best potato casserole ever. I’m taking that, and it will cook in our vehicle, plugged into our portable generator, as we make our way north. Not turkey fans, this family, so spiral-cut ham will be center. Warm, yeasty home-made dinner rolls. And I will also take strawberry-pretzel salad/dessert because it’s demanded for each family gathering.

    • Good morning, Becky.

Your potato casserole sounds divine. Potatoes are probably my fave vegetable–actually, I think they’re their own food group. And paired with cheese? Can’t get much better than that. And it sounds like your morphed version could be even better. 🙂

Hope you all have a great day, and that y’all are a blessing to you your in-laws. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. We’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner for my son and his family (1 grandchild) as well as my husband’s family tomorrow here in sunny South Texas and then flying to Virginia for a week to celebrate the holiday with my daughter and her family (3 grandkids!). Tim is doing a smoked turkey and a traditional baked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberries, rolls, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie (huge, purchased at COSTCO), and chocolate chip-peanut cookies for those not in favor of pumpkin pie. He started cooking yesterday! Personally, I eat turkey, cranberries (homemade), and green bean casserole, leaving room for pumpkin pie & Cool Whip. Happy Thanksgiving to all y’all!

    • Hi Kelly!

Sounds like you’re going to have a delicious holiday, and not just because of the food. Kiddos make holidays fun for sure.

My son, who is an excellent chef, will probably smoke a turkey. I’m contributing a broccoli/cheese casserole. Never made one, but I’ve got a great-sounding recipe.

Have a wonderful weekend and Giving Thanks Day, my friend.

  6. While I enjoy turkey, it’s really the “side-dishes” that I love most in a Thanksgiving meal—sweet potatoes, especially made my mom’s way with maple syrup and walnuts or pecans, no marshmallows; stuffing; green bean casserole made with onion strips and mushroom soup; my mother-in-laws fruit salad; mashed potatoes and gravy; dinner rolls with cranberry sauce. Dessert, pumpkin pie.

We gather every year at my brother-in-laws place for a big family gathering, usually 15-20 people.

    • Hi Dale–your menu sounds delicious.

I’m a side-dish lover, too. In fact, I’d load my plate with those and skip the turkey. However if there’s ham, watch out, piggy…I’m comin’ for ya!

I hope you and yours have a great day. 🙂

  7. We’ll be in Austin with our son, and we’ll eat out at a good restaurant that’s become our “go-to” for Thanksgiving. Turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie are my favorites.

On a Thanksgiving trip to Austin several years ago, we discovered a new-to-us dessert that became my No. 1 Favorite: Sticky Toffee Pudding. Very thankful for that. 🙂

    • Mornin’ Kay!

It seems like lots of folks eat out for Thanksgiving…I’ve never done that. I might have to try it some year or other.

And that dessert sounds scrumptious. Can you mail me one? 🙂

I hope you and your family have a wonderful together time, and that you don’t feel guilty over that pudding!

  8. We are pretty traditional. Since Mom died, my sister is in charge of hosting, and her kids and husband are not amused if a single dish is forgotten. Since gluten is now evil for a few family members, we have cauliflower stuffing. She has perfected gluten-free pie crust so pecan and apple pies are back on the menu. Pumpkin pie isn’t traditional in many Southern households.

    • Hi Marilyn!

In my book, traditional is always good. The stuffing made from cauliflower is a new one on me…might have to investigate. And pumpkin pie is low on my list of likes–would rather have pecan or apple any day.

Just reading all the comments is making me hungry!

      Have a great day!

  9. This year we’ll all be together at my place. The three grandboys love hot biscuits. I will be spatchcocking a turkey on the Traeger, which makes for shorter cook time (2-3 hours) and a juicier bird. Mrs. B will make her killer cranberry sauce and stuffing (my favorite, especially when slightly crunchy). And a pie selection for dessert.

We do a Christmas movie, too, and also love Miracle on 34th Street. We may change it up this year with a sleeper, Ernest Saves Christmas.

  10. We’re hosting our son and his girlfriend as well as a couple of his friends who need a place to celebrate. I have three December deadlines so I’m cheating this year–a Honeybaked ham and smoked turkey breast are both already ordered and we’ll buy the rest–except for Mrs. O’s delectable sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. Of course, the parades and football will be on as well.

    • Hey Douglas!

I’m all for cheating on kitchen duties when necessary…

Your feast & fellowship sounds delectable & fun.

Here’s wishing you & yours the best of the best! 🥳

  11. I’ll be going to my sister’s for the first time since my mom died in 2014. We’re eating Wednesday, but no turkey…not our favorite. 🙂 My sister and I will probably go to Cracker Barrel on Thursday. And Black Friday Shopping…
