There have been thousands upon thousands of memorable lines in novels, movies, TV shows, even well-known comedy routines. To wit, sincerity is everything. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made. (George Burns)
Your assignment for today is to share with us, IYHO, the most memorable line(s) in your memory banks. (See how I did that?) 🙂
Here’s a few to get you started.

I’ll be back…

You’re gonna need a bigger boat…

Book ’em Danno!

“Death doesn’t end life-never has.” ~Mike
May the force be with you.
The answer is 42
Good one, Warren.
Gotta ask. (Maybe not enough joe yet!)
42 what? 🙂
Just 42. It’s from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in case you don’t know.
Okay then! Learn something new every day here at TKZ!
“You tell ’em I’m comin’, and Hell’s comin’ with me, you hear? Hell’s comin’ with me!”
One of my favorite movies, favorite scenes, and favorite lines, Jim!
Thanks for chiming in this morning, my friend!
He’s dead, Jim.
I like it, Terry!
My husband and I repeat that line all the time. Like when we’re out orchard walking and see a dead tree, or mouse, or whatever. We’ve even said it to each other at the same time.
Thanks for dropping by!
Oh my goodness. So many great lines. The Dirty Harry quote for sure.
Terry mentioned McCoy’s classic “He’s dead, Jim.” Star Trek TOS was particularly good an endearing characters to you because of phrases that made them seem so real to us. McCoy also had “I’m a doctor not a (fill in the blank)”, Spock’s deadpan “fascinating”, etc. And of course one of the most heartbreaking memorable lines from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was Kirk at Spock’s funeral “Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most…human.” (still makes me cry when I think of it). Ricardo Montalban as Khan had quite a few memorable lines as well.
There are many other great memorable lines from different shows but of course they’re not coming to mind right now. But that has always been one of my measuring sticks for a TV show over the years–years later, does it have moments or lines that stand out to me? That’s what separates the best from the rest.
Good morning, Brenda.
“Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most…human.” I agree, a tear-jerker. The characters in the Star Trek franchise were well-done, IMHO, which is why that line tugs at your heart-strings.
Have a great weekend!
Beam me up Scottie
Hi Jane!
Another Trekkie fan. 🙂 That’s another one my husband and I say to each other all. the. time. Especially when we check out the news-really bad idea these days.
🙁
Have a great Friday.
The last line of Jack London’s novel, THE STAR ROVER, sticks with me though I read it as a young man decades ago. Context — the protagonist, Darrell Standing, is a university professor sentenced to die for murder. He copes with abuse and solitary confinement by “roving the stars”, which in hindsight seems like Transcendental Mediation.
When asked is he’d like to share any last words before execution he says, “Gentleman, I hope to live to see the day when capital punishement is abolished.”
Good morning, Sir.
Can’t say I’ve heard of the novel or the line you quote, but I agree, it’s a thought-provoker. It seems like we might be close to that world he envisioned in his last moments. Don’t know if that’s good or bad, but there it is!
Thanks for adding to the discussion this fine Friday…
“Just one more thing.”
“Welcome to the party, pal!”
“I’ll be back.”
Mornin’ Dale!
Three more memorable lines! This is fun . . . I wonder if there’s a board game out there where you have to either come up with a line from a story, or guess what story a line is from. Might be popular.
Have a great weekend. 🙂
So it goes. – Billy Pilgrim
No matter where you go there you are – Buckaroo Bonsai
It’s not the age it’s the milage – Indiana Jones
+1, especially on the BB quote!
No matter where you go there you are.
That’s the one I like, Alan. It kind of straightens out my jumbled thinking when I remember it, especially in these chaotic times. The Indiana Jones line is one of my faves, too, seeing as how it’s kind of starting to fit me. Did I just say that?? Oy!
Thanks for dropping in this morning.
Yeah, I am starting to buy birthday candles in the Sam’s Club sized box too.
Haha!
🤡
“In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” Anne Frank.
Brings a lump to my throat every time.
Debbie, I’ll see that lump and raise you another one… 🙁
It’s a doozy for sure, and a line that needs to be part of our DNA. Think of how life on planet earth would be if everyone thought the way she did.
Thanks for sharing that one with us this morning.
🙂
“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” – Stother Martin as the Captain in Cool Hand Luke…
And going back to Star Wars – with a Luke tie-in – “I have a bad feeling about this…”
And of course, completely unrelated to any of those is Marlon Brando/Don Corleone’s line from the Godfather: “Make him an offer he can’t refuse….”
Good day, George!
All three of these are stellar choices.
“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Could be a pronouncement on so many things happening in 2024 and beyond.
“I have a bad feeling about this…” Another line that I’ve used on occasion, especially when watching the news. Solo got that right!
“Make him an offer he can’t refuse….” One of my favorite movie franchises, and a great line.
Thanks for playing What’s Your Line? with us this morning! Have a good one…
For me, it’s a line from The Last of the Mohicans, “Stay alive! No matter what, I will find you!”
I think that line just hooked me on a spiritual level and I’ve never forgotten it.
Of course, there’s also “Fly you little flightless birds” from Ice Age II.
Hi Lori!
I love that movie, and that line too. And, Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best actors to come down the Hollywood pike IMHO. I’ll likely watch anything he’s in.
Thanks for stopping by!
Here are a few that came to mind.
“In the end, there can be only one.”
“Inconceivable!”
“He’s only mostly dead.”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
“He’s only mostly dead.” Priceless, Michelle.
“I love you.”
“I know.” I’m thinking that’s from U.S. Marshals, Kate Nelligan and Tommy Lee Jones? Another of my favorite movies.
Thanks for sharing in the fun this morning.
My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Hey, Brian!
Love that line. And it’s been used and abused on social media of late-have you noticed? I guess that’s what happens to great lines…
Have a good one!
Do or do not. There is no try.
Ahh . . . Kay! Thanks for bringing Yoda to the party.
Do or do not. There is no try. Was he speaking to authors? Coulda been, right?
Have a good one!
“There is no try,” is apposite for authors in another sense. We should never say, e.g., “Heliotrope Bart tried to lasso Little Bent Bow,” or any other action, UNLESS the action (1) fails or (2) is interrupted. Same goes for “attempted to,” “began to,” etc.
Good point, J…
“You played it for her, you can play it for me.”
Good morning!
Okay, not sure, but is it from Casablanca? 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, Doc!
Yes it is. Usually misquoted as “play it again, Sam.”
Ahh! Thanks for clarifying that.
👍👍👍
It is…. what it is.
Spit (can be substituted with excrement as well) in one hand and wish in the other. See which one gets filled up first.
This was a really fun read. Thank you!
You’re welcome, Susan!
“Spit (can be substituted with excrement as well) in one hand and wish in the other. See which one gets filled up first.”
Hadn’t heard that one, but there’s more than a kernel of truth in it.
Glad you stopped by this morning…have a great weekend!
…Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son. -Animal House
Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,
..and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.
Jonathan, Jonathan, JONATHAN! -Rollerball
Good morning, Robert.
My favorite on your list?
The first one, of course. I used a version of that one back in the day when I was feeding teenagers. 🤡
Thanks for playing with us this morning-and have a great weekend.
“D’oh!” Homer Simpson’s favorite saying.
Ahh, Elaine, who could forget that one!
Cartoons rule… or how about “Beep, beep!”?
Thanks for joining in the craziness this morning.
“And hey! [a beat] Let’s be careful out there.” ―Hill Street Blues
“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just like, uh, your opinion, man.” ―The Big Lebowski
Kevin: Yes, why does there have to be evil?
Supreme Being: I think it has something to do with free will.
―Time Bandits
Good ones, J. I remember Hill Street Blues very well. Lots of great lines!
The man & I are revisiting all of the NYPD Blue seasons. We laugh every time those street cops and detectives say “Anyways…”. And we’ve started saying it ourselves, which I’m not sure is a good thing. 🙂
Thanks for dropping in.
I’m late to the party (as usual) but I’ve always considered this to be the most perfect close to any novel:
He turned out the light and went into Jem’s room. He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning.
Hi John! Glad you could make it…and you’re not that late! 😬
That is a great line for sure…To Kill A Mockingbird, right?
We all need someone in our lives who will be there all night and still be there when we wake up. Beautiful words…
Thanks for popping in, and have a great weekend. 🥳
In our household, ANY quote from Firefly. They tend to be longer and more complex than pithy movie lines, and require that you remember the scene, but here’s one:
“…They wouldn’t mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.” Said by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (played by Nathan Fillion) on a covered wagon in a stream WEARING a settler’s dress and bonnet to a bunch of attackers on horseback.
Either you get it, or you really should watch the show. The language is exquisite.
Good morning, Alicia!
Thanks for this offering…it does make me want to see it. It sounds to me like the scene gives new meaning to the phrase “under cover”. 😂
Have a great day!
Good choice! I’m just familiar enough with Firefly that I briefly considered citing a quote from the show. Unf. I’m not familiar enough to recall any of the show’s delightful dialogue. Well done.
Thanks!
And back atcha!
Worst cancellation (by Fox) EVER. Ask any SF fan.
The ensemble of 9 main actors all went on to do major work, including Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, and Jewel Staite – plus the inimitable Ron Glass, unfortunately now gone (remember the Barney Miller sitcom?).
My kids still laugh at me because I have a hard time remembering anything verbatim – and there are SO many good quotes they know by heart.
Just had to search Firefly. I’ve never heard of it, but the synopsis sounds intriguing.
Thanks for the mention!
Yes, I remember Ron Glass from Barney Miller! Speaking of horrible cancellations, SyFy Channel’s “Dark Matter” termination was just as awful. The final scene of the last episode showed jillions of really, really alien ships debouching thru a portal from hyper-dyper space.

I gotta say, peeps, this has been smashing good fun here today! I hope y’all have had as much fun as I have.
Not too late to take spin with us if you haven’t already…🥳🥳
“What revoltin development this is.” Since I doubt many of the younger readers will know: William Bendix in The Life of Riley
Hi Patricia! Thanks for jumping in the canoe with us today…🤡
Younger readers? Thanks! I didn’t recognize it. 🥳
Have a great weekend, my friend!
“And, in the end, entropy always wins.” ~ Stephen King
Indeed, Garry!
Enjoying your hiking pictures.
Thanks for hangin’ with us…
“Today never has enough tomorrows.”
I like that one!
Reminds me of Ben Franklin’s words, “One today is worth two tomorrows”, which I used in my novel, No Tomorrows.
Thanks for adding to the discussion!
😃
