A book ought to be an icepick to break up the frozen sea within us. – Kafka
What do you think a book ought to be?

A book ought to be an escape from the real world, a pleasurable, visceral experience like no other.
“In a world that encompasses so much pain and fear and cruelty, it is noble to provide a few hours of escape, moments of delight and forgetfulness.” — Dean Koontz
Love this.
I second that. Great quote, Jim.
A book should be flexible enough for different readers to have different experiences.
Nice point. It’s great when you’re discussing a book with someone and their take-away was different than your own.
I think any book should be solid enough to use as a weapon. Nothing better for street fighting than the spine of a nice hardback copy of your favourite story.
Moby Dick has more stopping power than a Barbars Cartland.
A book should expand our appreciation and understanding of other people and places.
A book should be an eagle. It swoops down, digs its claws in, and flies us away for a time.
A book is like a portal to another world. I literally am unaware of what us going on around me.
